AFVOA HISTORY

Armed Forces Veterans Officers Association, Chennai made a very humble beginning 27 years back. The formation of this association was the brain child of Lt Col R Balaswamy.

Way back in 1994, he used to come across few retired service officers and their wives in Adyar area during his morning walks or while shopping. Almost all of these officers were those whom he had not met during his service career. Having seen the same faces over a period of few weeks, he mooted to them his idea of forming an association of retired service officers. This idea was well received by those to whom he talked and the exercise of forming an association was started.

On 07 Aug 1994, 18 officers and their spouses got together for a “Greet, Meet & Treat” at Youth Hostel in Adyar. It was decided to name the association as EXSOA (Ex Service Officers Assn, Adyar). It was also decided that the members would meet at Bi-Monthly intervals.

In the General Body Meeting held on 11 Feb 1996, Lt Gen C Sundara Rao became the Patron and has been the guiding force of the association since then.

In May 2000, it was decided to rename EXSOA Adyar as Armed Forces Veterans Officers Association Chennai (AFVOA). Since then, AFVOA has been a wonderful platform for interaction to the Veteran Officers and families in Chennai.

Activities of AFVOA include bi-monthly meetings which are held at Palm Grove Officers Institute on a Sunday morning. Conduct of two rounds of Tambola is a regular feature and the meeting is followed by a sumptuous lunch. Annual picnics are conducted generally in the month of Jan every year.

Silver Jubliee celebrations of our Association was held in August 2019.

AFVOA has presently a strength of around 251 members.
