Starting this issue of the newsletter, we plan to carry items of interest to our fraternity in the “legal corner”. We invite contributions from experts as well as other knowledgeable persons from amongst our members. Contributions will be acknowledged in the newsletter. To start with, we shall take up the subject of NOMINATION (of bank accounts, etc). The subject we have chosen appears to be a sea of confusion, judging from the apparent fact that every bank surveyed by Brig Muthulaxmi and by Wg Cdr Ravi Mani had its own procedure set down, all at variance with one another. As all of you know, we nominate our near (and dear) ones to receive the amounts in our bank accounts after we have passed on to better things. There are nominations for LIC policies, bank and post office accounts, telephone connections, shares in companies etc. In all these cases, individuals are requested to contact the concerned agency, and do the appropriate nomination, so that the beneficiary is not put to much inconvenience. Without a nomination, our beloved relatives would actually be left cursing us, since they would be sent on a virtual merry-go-round trying to get succession certificates, legal heir certificates, death certificates, and affidavits by the half dozen. After they have obtained all these, (and if they are still alive!), then they would have to wait for a fairly lengthy further period till the well-entrenched officialdom that is barely hidden under every Indian’s shirt gets going. Obviously, the minimum one would have to pay for obtaining what was bequeathed would be in terms of accelerated wear and tear of footwear by our dearly beloved. The contributors of this piece have discovered that things are much better if one leaves behind proper nominations (but only just!). Madras Gymkhana Club 26. Response from members for contributions has been good but not overwhelming. During casual discussions the universal feeling is that Garrison members need to be treated at par with Resident members, particularly where it concerns membership for spouses and dependents. Next Meeting Happiness is a perfume you cannot pour on others without getting a few drops on yourself. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson 27.
