Obituary 31. The members of AFVOA mourn the demise of the following: a) Shri N Ramaswami (92 yrs), father of Wg Cdr R Balasubramanian, who passed away on 25 th Feb 2003 {tele: 2234 5049} b) Mrs Annie Abraham (70 yrs) wife of Lt Col K C Abraham, EME, who passed away on the 25 th May 2003 {tele No 2234 4634}. c) Shri N T Rajan (83yrs), father-in-law of Wg Cdr R Balasubramanian, who passed away on 03 rd Jun 2003 {tele: 2234 5049}. d) Maj C Mansukhani (92 yrs), AC an octogenarian whom we had honoured earlier, breathed his last on 06 th Jun 2003 {tele No 2621 4376} e) Lt Col K C Abraham, (72 years) EME passed away on the 10 th June 2003. f) Col RD Ayyar (95 years), breathed his last on 11 th June 2003. 32. Members represented the AFVOA at the funerals of many of the above. AFVOA extends its condolences to the members of the bereaved families In Memoriam Col RD Ayyar 33. AFVOA had planned to honour Col Ayyar – the nonagerian during our regular meeting held on 11 th August 2002. At the last minute, he was unable to attend the function. 34. Nonetheless, we do not wish to deny our members the benedictional influence of his life’s story. Born in 1907, on the 7 th of October, Col Ayyar started his career at the Madras Medical College (MMC) in the late 1920’s, working first in the orthopaedics dept and then in the Department of Anatomy. He then proceeded to London to acquire an FRCS (general surgery). Shortly after his return to the MMC, came an offer (in 1935) to join the Indian Army as a medical officer, and this he gladly accepted. The then Government of the Madras Presidency recalled him in 1946, but Col Ayyar was not relieved by the Armed Forces, and hence he went on to become the FIRST Advisor in Surgery in what is now the Directorate
