Page 58 of 61 OUR NEW OFFICE BEARERS Maj Gen (Retd) Jose Manavalan, AVSM Gen Manavalan was commissioned into the Madras Sappers (4 Engineer Regiment) on 20 Dec 1970. He is from the 37 NDA/46 Regular Course. His regimental tenures were in 4 Engineer Regiment, 5 Engineer Regiment and MEG & Centre. He commanded 4 Engineer Regiment from 1992 to 1995 and was Commandant of the Centre from 2002 to 2005. He has had several staff tenures as IO in Engineers Branch of a Corps HQ, BM of an Infantry Brigade in Op Pawan, SO1 at HQ Central Command (Engineers), Col Adm of an Infantry Division, Col GS of CME Pune, and Dir MT 10 at Army HQ. As a Brigadier he was CE of Project Beacon in the Valley. On promotion he was posted as MG ic Adm at HQ Central Command from where he took PMR in Dec 2007. He has done all the mandatory courses in the Army and was awarded the AVSM in 2008. After retirement, he has worked in a variety of corporate assignments - first as CEO of a Textile SEZ at Nellore. Later he was CAO of Frontier Lifeline Hospital in Mogappair, Chennai and then CEO of Radiant Medical Services at Chennai. Currently he is working on a project for setting up Assisted Living Centres across the country. He is an avid sportsman and plays hockey, squash and golf. He is a keen angler and water sports enthusiast. He belongs to Kerala, but has chosen to settle in Chennai. He has a son and a daughter both of whom are working in Chennai. His wife Teresa is born and brought up in Chennai, and is widely travelled. She completed her MSc from Madras University. She is an accomplished home maker and has done several successful welfare projects in the Army at different levels. Gp Capt Retd) R Shankar A postgraduate from the Delhi School of Economics, Gp Capt (Retd) R Shankar was commissioned in the Education Branch of the IAF on 15 Sep 1965. In a career spanning three decades, in addition to instructional and training duties, he has held various diverse assignments such as Movement Control Officer, Cipher Officer [1965 and 1971 ops], Asst. Director IAF Golden Jubilee Cell [commended by Chief of Air Staff for publicity efforts], PRO, Ministry of Defence, CADO Air Force Station Hashimara, Command Org. Officer, Central Air Command, Allahabad and Deputy Director Training, at Air Headquarters. After his superannuation in Oct 1994, he served as a volunteer for ten years with ‘The Spastic Society of India’, [now Vidhyasagar] in Chennai. A serious Freemason, he likes to read, listen to classical music and travel. Gp Capt. Shankar is married to Dr. Phil. Mrs. Vijaylakshmi Shankar. Maj (Retd) Joy Koruthu, Secretary Born in Malaysia, the only child to his parents in 1952, Joy had his elementary schooling there. In the early sixties returned along with his parents to settle down in their ancestral village Eraviperoor (Tiruvalla), Kerala. He continued his education in Sainik School, Kazhakootam (Trivandrum) and joined NDA (41 st course) in Jan 1969. He is the proud recipient of the Kerala Govt ever rolling Trophy for the highest ranking NDA entrant from Sainik School for year 1969 (first recipient). Joy was commissioned into the Corps of Engineers (Madras Sappers) on 24 Dec 1972 from IMA (50 th Reg) Ha has done his Engg degree and advanced post graduate course in Civil Engg from CME Pune in addition to mandatory courses.. (He is still under height for the Army!)Has served in the Regiment, MES (as GE and Design Officer), NCC and on Instructional tenure at CME. His parent regiment is 6 Engr Regt and has been a SIXER always. Joy retired prematurely in 1997; he joined a Sapper officer owned reputed Overseas Manpower Consultancy and was with them till 2008 in two stints. Presently he is a qualified Consultant in Insurance and Mutual Fund. He is attained the CPFA certification.
