Army Group Insurance (AGI) had introduced on 1 st April 1991 a financial assistance scheme for retired ex-servicemen to augment the cost of surgery/treatment of diseases like heart, cancer and kidney transplant. This facility was available only till 15 years after retirement or the age of 70 years of age whichever was earlier. This has now been extended for life, for widows in receipt of family pension. And to all others who retired with disability pension. Scheme is also extended to those who retired prior to 1976. The monetary ceiling at the moment is Rs two lakhs ten thousand each for the member and spouse separately (Rs 4.2 lakhs total). Medical Benefit Scheme (MBS) – MBS - 1995 12. This scheme was meant for pensioners and their spouses who did not join the earlier scheme. This continues to remain open. The benefits of the scheme can only be claimed after a year from the date of joining. The treatment/surgery is to be carried out only in AGI approved hospitals, which are periodically notified.
