After the tambola, Col A Krishnaswami announced the obituary on the passing away of Air Marshal S Raghavan. Two minutes silence was observed. Brig K Muthulaxmi then invited the ladies to be honoured for their having reached the magic age of 80. Three ladies were present on this occasion; some others were very indisposed to attend. Those who were honoured with a ponnadai shawl were: Mrs Rajam Sundara Rao , born on 21 Jun 1932, is a home maker with a generous, charitable, compassionate and forgiving temperament. She is interested in music and dance. She is committed to social work and volunteered to work in the Military Hospital, Delhi Cantt, to look after the wounded soldiers in the war with China (1962) and Pakistan (1971). She has travelled widely in India and internationally. She is the wife of our Patron. Mrs Sumitra Suryanarayanan , born on 27 Aug 1929, is wife of Brig CR Suryanarayanan and a person of many dimensions. Her passion is to assist her doctor- husband in every way possible. She has helped the doctors in the free clinic for the poor and visited patients in the slum areas and counselled the patients and their relations. From 1950, she has helped the doctors in treating patients with high flux radioactive medicines as people were frightened to work in the radio isotope centre. She is fond of music and gardening. Mrs Lakshmi Karra, born on 02 Nov 1931, is wife of (Late) Lt.Col K.R.Karra, Bombay Sappers. She has done her Doctorate in Geography and worked as Lecturer and Principal of many reputed Institutions. She is a great Sai Baba devotee, and spends most of her time doing social work in the name of Sai Baba. Immediately thereafter, Lt Gen C Sundara Rao announced a donation of Rs 10000 to the AFVOA. He said that he will be turning 90 in August and his wife has recently turned 80, what better opportunity to make this contribution. Accepting the cheque, the President thanked him for his generous gesture and the assembled members expressed their appreciation. It was now the turn of the gentlemen to be honoured for having earned the distinction of becoming octogenarians. The President invited them and those who were honoured with the AFVOA memento were: Major Gen B Sitaraman, was born on 16 Apr 1932. He is a product of Madras Medical College and was commissioned into the AMC in 1958. He had the privilege of being the RMO of 2 Rajputs (Gen VK Singh’s Bn). He accompanied the Laotian Delegation to Indo China in 1962. He specialized in anaestheology from AFMC Pune. Later he commanded a medical battalion in 17 Div. He was the first ADMS of Assam Rifles and the ADMS of 1 Armd Div. From 1983 to 1990 he served at Army HQ. He then was posted as Commandant of Command Hospital, Lucknow, where he retired in 1991.
