The civilian artistes included a visually challenged person who played the electric organ and also gave a solo performance on the Accordion. Songs rendered by Sqn Ldr Unni Nair, Mr. Narayan (Kishore Kumar’s songs) and Mr. Chandan (Mohd Rafi’s songs) brought wonderful memories of the past. The Executive Committee wishes to place on record its deep appreciation for the efforts made by Sqn Ldr Unni Nair in organizing an excellent programme. MATTERS MILITARY Lt General VK Singh takes over as the 26th Army chief General VK Singh, the erstwhile GOC-in-C of Eastern Command, who is the senior most infantry officer, took over as the Chief of the Army Staff at New Delhi on 01 Apr 2010. 59-year-old Gen VK Singh took over as the 26 th Chief from General Deepak Kapoor, who retired from service. He will stay at the helm of the 1.13 million personnel-strong Army for over two years. The defence ministry had on January 23 issued the order appointing Gen VK Singh for the top post after the Cabinet Committee on Appointments cleared his name a day earlier. He was in the news recently when he recommended action against four General officers indicted by a probe in the Sukna land scam in Darjeeling district of West Bengal. A third generation officer from the RAJPUT Regiment, Gen VK is a graduate of the Wellington-based Defence Services Staff College as well as the US Army War College at Carlisle. He also did a Rangers Course at Fort Benning in the US. He has vast experience in counter insurgency operations having commanded units and formations in all field areas. The next bi-monthly meeting will be held on Sunday, 16 May 2010. The venue as usual is the Palm Grove Ecological Park and Sports Complex, Island Grounds.
