On 15 August this year we celebrated the commencement of our 60 th year of Freedom. This indeed is a milestone. We have often heard it said that life begins at 60. If it were so for man it is obviously true many times over for a nation which is a collection of citizens for each whom the 60 th year is milestone. Appropriately this is the time for us to pause momentarily, take stock of our assets and strengths and for a little while dream of what we wish for our lives as individuals and our nation as a whole. 2. Our country was born after a prolonged freedom struggle. At birth we were traumatized by partitions in the East and West. The rest of India was laid low by colonial rulers who neglected local administration during the II World War years. Industries were stunted so much that we practically were unable to produce any thing. Money was hard to come by and there were very little opportunities for laboring and earning wages. Food was scarce and strictly controlled by a rationing system designed to cater for the white man’s war.
