Your attitude - your perspective, your outlook, how you feel about yourself, how you feel about other people - determines your priorities, your actions, your values. Your attitude determines how you interact with other people and how you interact with yourself. ~ Carolyn Warner Dear Veteran, From the Editor’s Desk 1. During the middle of last month – to be more precise - 17 th May was observed the World over as Telecommunication Day. The theme this year was “Communication for All”. The importance of communication – at no point should be under estimated. At one time communication referred to telephone communications, thanks to the genius of Alexander Graham Bell. Initially it was the customary little black box which in due course of time gave way to hand-held mobile phones, which possibly is carried by almost everyone in the metros. One of the features that these gadgets have is “caller Identity”, which enables the called subscriber to know as to who is calling him. Quite often, the call will not be picked up, if the called party does wish to speak to the caller! That also is communication of a different sort! On the other hand, Veteran Officers it is hoped will always try and communicate and do it effectively. It will be apt to quote two stanzas from the Tirukkural which one of our own officers Lt Col CR Sundar, has taken pains to translate. The first one says: “ Disparaging words pain a man even when uttered in jest. Therefore, those who know human nature are courteous even to their enemies”. (stanzas 100:995) and the second quote goes like this: “Why would anyone speak cruel words, Having observed the happiness that kind words confer? To utter harsh words when sweet ones would serve Is like eating unripe fruits when ripe ones are at hand”. (stanzas 10: 99-100).
