One of the avowed aims of the Association when it was formed was “to exchange views, news, and share experiences and help each other and the community at large.” Over the years the Association has been in existence, we have achieved what was aimed at. And as Ward very aptly puts it, ‘to live abundantly’, we need to “care about others.” During service – the famed sayings of Lord Philip Chetwode always echoes in the minds of the officers and ‘caring for others’ became a part and parcel of service life. However, on hanging up our uniforms, one gets a nagging feeling that, instead of pulling up the rest of our civilian brethren to our way of life of caring for others, we seem to have ‘forgotten’ our moorings and tend to slip into uncalled for lethargy. Remember the small courtesies that we followed whilst in service – being respectful to elders, honesty to oneself, paying bills when due without being reminded, of being in time; of informing people whether we would or not attend a function when called, informing changes in address/telephone numbers and in general being considerate to others – wonder why we do not practise them any more? It is hoped that in this New Year of 2003, let us resolve that each one of us will strive to be more caring than we have been in the past. 2. As mentioned in our last issue, we propose to continue to highlight a few episodes of military history. In this issue we shall be talking to you about the three others – two of whom won their PVCs during the actions which took place immediately after Independence – the 1948 operations in Jammu and Kashmir and the third won his PVC during the operations undertaken under the aegis of the UN – the operations in Congo. The redoubtable persons were - Naik Jadu Nath Singh, CHM Piru Singh and Capt Gurbachan Singh Salaria.
