AFOVA Newletters of Year 2001
Page 7 of 52 15. In the last few issues we did carry a few questions/quizzes to be answered. This has not been as popular as expected – maybe with age one does not want to exercise the grey cells any more! The idea of the column was to pass on knowledge. It is possible that the members are otherwise so busy that they no time (inclination?) to ferret out the information. Hence, it was felt that we could pass on the same without requesting you to tax your faculties. Heritage Buildings – Defence 16. The Army owns about ten per cent of urban space in the country. Further, it also owns a wealth of colonial buildings, which are a source of heritage wealth. Some of the historic buildings that the Army owns in the Fort are: Wellesley House - built in 1796, where Arthur Wellesley who later became Lord Wellington, lived while winning his spurs. The Grand Arsenal - built in 1772, situated next to Wellesley House. The Area Headquarters, opposite the Grand Arsenal, once the city’s first Town Hall. Fort House , residence of the Fort Commandant, situated next to the present Secretariat. Clive House , once Admiraly House and now shared with the Archeological Survey of India.
