Page 21 of 22 Quiz Time It seems that we were not very clear with the ground rules for the quiz-time section of the newsletter-members who probably knew the answers did not send in their responses to the AFVOA quiz master-Brig VA Subramanyam. It has therefore been decided that we will allow members to have another shy at solving these quizzes and answering the questions thereafter. In addition, we are adding a few more. The number of prizes will be doubled Here are a few teasers- prizes will be given at the next meeting to those who can send in the first six all/most correct entries. (a) With how few assistants can an Intrepid explorer make a six-day crossing on foot of an absolutely barren desert, if he and the available assistants can each carry only enough food and water to last one man four days. Your solution must be a humane one! (b) Two friends went down the descending escalator at one of London’s underground tube railway stations. John walked down, taking 50 steps to reach the bottom; Peter ran down, taking 75. If you are told that Peter ran three steps in the time that John walked one, can you say how many steps are visible when the escalator is stopped for the night? (c) A river police patrol sets out on its usual ‘beat’, a journey that takes it upstream and then downstream and finally upstream again to it’s starting point. On this particular day the river is running faster than usual. Will this make any difference to the time taken to complete the journey?
