Section 7- From the Archives CV 2 No. 02 / 2020 Page 235 of 237 Honouring the Elders In the meeting held on 11 August 2002, at the Youth Hostel, four of our elder veterans were honoured by the President. The elderly included: a) Brig Suryanarayanan AMC, b) Maj Gen TB Poduval EME, c) Maj Gen S Venkataraman VSM AMC and d) Capt GS Bhaskaran Madras Regt. At that function, Colonel RD Ayyar Padmabhushan AMC (born 1907), the only Nonagenarian – a distinguished and utterly dedicated surgeon cum physician of national fame had agreed to personally attend the function. But at the last moment due to mild indisposition, he was unable to keep the appointment. He was honoured at his residence a few days later. Resumes of the contributions made by them to the nation are included in our newsletter 5 of 2002 Medical cover for Veterans The Government with grandiose plans and announcements launched ECHS. Members were eagerly waiting for the implementation of the proposed polyclinics and issue of the prescribed medicines and hospital treatments. A welcome step and everyone hoped that the scheme becomes successful. Picnic 22 Dec 2002 - Camp Gloria AFVOA managing committees over the period had developed expertise in organizing outdoor activity games and innovative brain teasing quiz that were mainly organized by our ladies. (Man behind the gun was for administrative support only). There were no repetitions of the programmes and as such in every picnic; there were many new and challenging events. For this picnic the ladies who kept the large and diverse audience spell bound were Mrs Usha Subramanian, Mrs Rajeshwari Raghavachari and Mrs Chitra Rajan. The Committee had permitted our members to bring guests for the picnic and they were impressed by the bonhomie and meticulous manner the events were organized and conducted. Our out station Member - Col Ashok Choudry and his wife Chhanda and daughter Anuradha drove down from Pondicherry to attend the event. The event has been covered in the Newsletter 1 of 2003. Meeting on 23 Feb 2003 Defence officers Colony The venue was not new as we held meetings earlier and our members residing in the colony were able to manage it with ease. For the convenience of members, transport was organized from Youth hostel to the venue. It was the final meeting for the present committee and Maj Gen N. Viswanathan handed over of the baton to the newly nominated (ELECTED) committee headed by AVM V Krishnaswamy VSM as President.
