STATION EVENTS Sports:: Golf Adding lead to glass is a tricky process but if the correct amount of lead oxide is added when glass is made you get a high density glass with an abnormally high refractive index. This heightened refractive index causes white light to split into the spectra of rainbow colours. Take a chalice, a goblet, a biggish open mouthed, footed cup, a cup with a stem and base, one that is made of the finest lead doped crystal glass that is almost 10” high and about the same width at the brim. Give it to a talented glass cutter with the steadiest of hands to cut designs onto it with a diamond wheel which runs in water to keep it cool. After it is cut dip it in a mix of acid to give it high polish. Mount the chalice on a green, square platform of the appropriate size almost 3” high. On one phase of this base pedestal, on golden plate, inscribe in arched letters the words GENERATIONS CUP, and below that HEADQUARTERS ATNK&K AREA. That is the trophy instituted by our Fmn HQ for the Annual Veterans Vs the Serving Fraternity Golf Tournament. That was the prize for which the veterans and serving officers fought – ball for ball, stroke for stroke and hole for hole – that fine Sunday morning on the 19 th day of Apr 2009. It was a ten four-balls match. We thus had to present a team of 20 players. No matter we were short by two players but the game started in right earnest with balls going up in the air in all the nine tees dot at 0630 hours. It was a nice, breezy, cool morning. And we were lucky; the ambience remained cloudy almost till 1000 hours. The winds, however played truant. What started wafting as a zephyr slowly gathered speed and by late-morning blew away the cloud cover to leave us playing in the last hour under a huge, azure sky, lit up by a solitary, vivid Chennai sun.
