There is no “cure” nor ”treatment “ as yet for mental retardation, but depending on the intensity, extensiveness and the type of damage to the brain, when mental retardation is detected as early as possible, the person can be trained in skills of self management, movements, communication, socialisation and understanding. 28. Right to a life of dignity for the person with disability . Every person, including the person with disability has a right to a life of dignity and this will become realistic when the community accepts the person as one among them. An excluded person is an isolated person. This non acceptance is what makes the parents of persons with disability feel guilty, ashamed, sorrowful and helpless about the situation they are in. 29.
