Celebrations 60. The family of Cdr VP Mudaliar celebrated his “Kanakabhisehkam” on 10 th Nov 2004. AFVOA wishes Cdr and Mrs. Mudaliar many more years of happiness. 61. Wedding Bells  Geena daughter of Capt B Sashidharan and Mrs. Prasanna, was married to Anup on 28 th October 2004 at Chennai.  Muralikrishna son of Col K Gopal and Mrs. (Dr) Rukmani Gopal married Bhavani on 15 th Nov at Chennai.  Aarathi daughter of Capt (IN) H Balakrishnan and Smt Leela Krishnan married Sriram on 01 st Dec 2004 at Chennai. Many of our members may not be aware that AVM V Krishnaswamy, VSM, and his charming wife Smt Jaya, decided not to settle down for a quiet ‘retired’ life when he hung up his uniform in 1988, after a hectic life in the Air Force Signals. 63. Jaya gave up her teaching career as a Headmistress of a school in Delhi to return to Chennai. During her career, she had an exposure to work with special children. She presented a paper based on a computer programme to train differently abled children at a UNICEF workshop in 1987. Upanayan is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘to lead along’. She wrote a computer programme which helps in the therapy of mentally retarded children. The programme is the first of its kind to suit the Indian cultural needs taking into account the feeding, toilet habits, and other cultural variances. It has also been programmed for children with various mental disabilities associated with conditions like epilepsy, autism, cerebral palsy and other disorders, so that a database is now available for children with differing challenges. 64. On retirement, AVM had joined the Sanmar group as a Consultant. The Sanmar group was so impressed by the success of upanayan that they set up the Madhuram Narayanan Centre for Exceptional Children (MNC) in 1989. 65. The MNC believes that early intervention gives far better results than just therapy Hence they work only with children upto the age 5 ½ years. During these early years, children are quicker to learn and hence it is crucial that intervention is done as soon as possible after the birth of the child. The mothers are expected to be with the child at the MNC, so as to learn the teaching techniques. 66. The MNC is jointly managed by the Krishnaswamys.
