PARTICIPATE Make the most of the opportunities you have to be with your grandchildren.  Go to School: Visit their school. Ask your grandchildren to show you around, introduce you to their teachers, attend open houses, plays and other activities whenever you can.  Discover: Many schools host grandparents’ day. Ask your grandchildren if their schools have any special events for grandparents. Try and attend.  Share your experience: Schedule a classroom visit to talk about your job, a favourite hobby, your heritage or your travels. LEARN Children are born curious. Help keep that desire to learn alive by introducing them to new ideas, things, people and experiences. □ Good, Better, Best Urge your grandchildren to challenge themselves – in school and out of school. The more they try – the more they will be able to do. □ Individuality: Every child has his or her own way of learning things, doing things. Parents and grandparents need to learn these differences so that they can help each child in the best way. □ Explain Mistakes: Help them realise that mistakes are a part of learning. Share, when you make a mistake too. Children need to understand that learning from mistakes is a lifelong process. ENCOURAGE Children need to know that the people they love have faith in them. Encourage them to try their best at everything they do. Inspire your grandchildren in other ways, too. When you’re together, help them choose activities that their talents, imagination and energy to the fullest. • Go To Work: Talk about what they would like to do “when they grow up”. Encourage them to visit the work world that they are interested in. If you work, invite them to your work place. • I Can!: Whenever you hear your grandchildren say: “I can’t” look for ways to show them they can. If they need more help, try to give it. • Discourage TV: Most children spend just minutes a day reading -and hours watching TV. Look for other ways to spend time together.
