AFOVA Newletters of Year 2001

Page 3 of 52 the games. The first game was “ Feel, Touch and Identify ”. It involved each member of the team to pick out from a closed bag one pair of matched items, by feel and touch. Few things are impossible to diligence and skill. Great works are performed not by strength, but perseverance. ˜ Samuel Johnson 7. The second game involved “ Skill and Agility ”. The members of the team were to throw a tennicoit ring which was to be collected on a rod held aloft by the team captain, who was positioned at a distance of fifteen feet away. The game called for great deal of dexterity by the receiving captain and the not-too-dexterous throwers. Kudos to Smt Chitra Rajan, who was the only lady Captain on the receiving end. She bagged a maximum of five out of six throws. The MCPs would call it “chivalry”. Keep on going and the chances are you will stumble on something, perhaps when you are least expecting it. I have never heard of anyone stumbling on something sitting down. ˜ Charles Kettering 8. The game of Tambola evoked the usual interest with occasional chants of “shake it up” and “bogey”. Time was available for three games and the winners were more than amply rewarded. However, in spite of the enhanced amount of Rs 800/= in 50 numbers, the snowball went unclaimed. Col J Balakrishnan, Surg Capt C V Natarajan, Smt Susila Balakrishnan and Lt Col T K Vijayarangan were the winners of the various houses. 9. Lt Col V Chennaian, our prospective new member inaugurated his arrival with a liberal contribution of softy ice cream (all on the house) . Incidentally, he runs a chain of ice Cream parlours in the city, under the banner of “Ram’s Milky Way”. The members profusely thanked him for his kindness and generosity. Additionally, Col Chennaian, distributed coupons enabling members to ‘buy one – take one free cup of ice cream’ at any of the outlets. 10. The sumptuous lunch had its effect on some of our elderly as well as the not-so- elderly members who unhesitatingly embraced Mother Nature for a cool slumber under the shady trees. The forty winks was prolonged due to the strains of the melodious Meera bhajan sung by Smt Jaya Subramanyam, followed by a tuneful rendering of a variety of songs, all in the name of ‘Anthakshari’. The children were far more active than the elders. Col Raju’s grand daughter, was not only the youngest participant, but also obtained the maximum applause. The wake-up call for the tea had to be really loud, so as to ensure that nobody missed the return bus! 11. Col R I Subramanian, another of our founder members, requires a special mention for his ever willing and smiling offer to assist the organizers, in arranging the picnic. With his enormous enthusiasm he successfully obtained sponsors to provide gift hampers. These were distributed as prizes to the various winners as well as to those who helped and assisted in making the outdoor get together an unqualified success. New Members 12. The fraternity welcomes the following new members and hopes that their association with the AFVOA will be both fruitful and enjoyable. a) Lt Col V Chennaian, NCC b) Sqn Ldr B H S Iyer
