Ignore me, and I may not forgive you. Encourage me, and I may not forget you. ˜ William Arthur 23. This goes back to days when some of us were cadets at the Indian Military Academy. Capt Steve Norton, then a platoon commander, often said that “Those who Work will make Mistakes. Those who Don’t - don’t”. He enjoined the cadets to belong to the former category, for as they say that work has not killed anybody as yet. Many of us who have followed this have obviously risen in life. The essence is therefore that we should not be afraid of mistakes. As our first prime Minster Jawaharlal Nehru said, that the largest room in his house was room for improvement. Learning from our mistakes (or for that matter from others’) is a process of continuous learning. As retired veterans we have one additional virtue – that is gained not only by age but also by experience and perhaps the beatings in life that we might have endured. These virtues are Forgiveness and Tolerance. 24. Our attempts to compile the Telephone Directory – “Hello Veterans’’ has evoked a fair share of criticisms and kudos. Criticisms are accepted with humility. We do humbly regret omissions however inconsequential. But please rest assured that they certainly were not deliberate. We do crave your forgiveness in this regard. As regards the word of praise, we are thankful to all of you, for they will encourage us to do even better in future. After the release ceremony of the Telephone Directory by Maj Gen Jayashankar, all the members who were present at the function collected their copies. Sqn Ldr H Ramakrishnan, is one of our elderly members, who recently celebrated his eightieth birthday, earlier this Year. One of his daughters Smt Jamuna Krishnanraj, has brought out a book titled “Shabda Sangam”. The book is a Dictionary of words of common origin in Hindi and Tamil with English Meanings. The book establishes the fact that Indian languages have a common affinity. The book is very reasonably priced. Copies of the book are available with the officer.
