Trivia (Terms Unique to IAF) Contributed by : Wg Cdr S Harshavardhan Queen Mary Does the name Queen Mary have any connection with Indian Air Force.? Yes, it does. Queen Mary in IAF refers to a Specialist Mechanical Transport Vehicle which you will find in all Flying Stations and Base Repair Depots. This vehicle consists of two elements – the Prime Mover and a Trailer. The most important element in this vehicle is the trailer which is generally 40 feet long and 8 feet wide. It has a very low ground clearance of around 12 inches. It has a carrying capacity of 5 tons. It has rails on both sides which allows the carrying of wings in an upright position resting on their leading edges. It can carry a completer fighter aircraft in a dismantled state. The “Queen Mary” nickname is supposedly due to the large size of the trailer being compared to the ocean liner RMS Queen Mary, which served as a troop transport during WW2. This vehicle was used extensively during World War II by Royal Air Force and it is understood that nearly 4,000 of these trailers were produced during that period.
